About The Group

The Novel Thin-film Actuating Materials Group is led by Professor Alfonso H.W. Ngan from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Hong Kong. Our primary research interest is in artificial muslces for compact actuation applications.

Our work includes the development, characterization, and modelling of nanoporous metals/metal-oxides. We investigate new actuating materials, actuation mechanisms, and synthesis method with an aim of achieving higher actuation stress/strain and lower fabrication costs. Our studies combines multidisciplinary knowledge from material science, electrochemistry, and mechanical engineering.

The Novel Thin-film Actuating Materials Group is led by Professor Alfonso H.W. Ngan, the Department head of the of Mechanical Engineering Department at The University of Hong Kong. Our research interest is in artificial muscle technologies for compact applications, and our focus is in nanoporous metal/metal-oxide actuators.
